Red Kite

Introducing Red Kite, a new Classic Red Bearded Iris and part of our Award Winning Iris Collection.

Building Your Collection

Red Kite is a deep intense ‘wine coloured red’, appreciably darker than the popular Red Pike, and deeper still than Henry Sidgwick.  Real lustrous ‘Velvet’ texture to the flowers with characteristic branching. A stunning distinctive plant that goes well with other strong colours. Named after the Raptor which was making a comeback to the UK in the 1990’s after many years absence.

My father always said the ‘reds’ were the most difficult colours to hybridise. This is one of his best and a great addition to the colour range on offer.

This outstanding Classic Red Bearded Iris is hardy, bulks up well and flowers mid-season. Plant as a single group, or in  blocks/drifts of the same colour. Scented.

Mixing with other Colours

These ‘Dodsworth’ irises combine clear clean colours, great branching and perfect flower shape to create a ‘Perfect’ Iris. Understand why these single colour irises known as ‘selfs’ mix so well with other colours groups to give you real scope to design your own distinctive colour palette.

Mix Red Pike with other ‘Hots’, oranges, magentas, browns and to great effect with ‘Softs’, the pinks and pale yellows to see the sheer vibrancy of these ‘Dodsworth’ irises.

Planting with Pinks

Remember how useful  ‘Pinks’ are in this context, spanning the early/mid/ late flowering periods. Because of this they give you so many options to extend the iris season. Eileen Louise flowers early, Catherine Seville in mid-season, and both Sherwood Pinkand Century Pink are late, very late.

Registered by Bryan Dodsworth in 1993. Height 38” (97cm). Red/wine. Bronze beards.
