Red Pike

Discover Red Pike, an outstanding Red Bearded Iris from our Award Winning Collection of British Bearded Irises

Building Your Collection

Note this sumptuous velvet red, it is one of the best ‘reds’ available today . It has the classic ‘Dodsworth’ form and branching. Notoriously hard to hybridise, this red iris  is much admired and warrants place in any garden. I would never be without it!

This outstanding Red Bearded Iris is hardy, bulks up well and flowers mid-season. Plant as a single group, or in  blocks/drifts of the same colour. Intense spicy scent.

Naming

The original name ‘Chateau Lafitte’ describes the true depth and intensity of colour. After threats of a possible legal dispute it is now named after a favourite Lakeland fell that lies between between Ennerdale and Buttermere.

Mixing with other Colours

These ‘Dodsworth’ irises combine clear clean colours, great branching and perfect flower shape to create a ‘Perfect’ Iris. Learn why single colour irises known as ‘selfs’ mix so well with other colours groups and give you the chance to design your own distinctive colour palette.

Mix Red Pike with other ‘Hots’, Oranges, Purples, and other Reds. Alternatively, try planting with  ‘Softs’, particularly the pinks and it is also worth experimenting with pale yellows to see the sheer vibrancy of these ‘Dodsworth’ irises.

Planting with Pinks

Remember too how useful  ‘Pinks’ are in any planting scheme, so why not give them a go? They simply give you so many extra  colour combinations. Also, they span early/mid/ late flowering periods and offer ways to extend the iris season. Why not try Eileen Louise (early), Catherine Seville (mid-season), and Sherwood Pink and Century Pink (very late)? Put simply, you have nothing to lose!

Top Tip

Try planting Red Pike with Sherwood Pink in your garden, the contrast is amazing. This is a combination I use to great effect in RHS Shows.
