Henry Sidgwick

Henry Sidgwick is a Ruffled Red Bearded Iris. Named after the Founder of Newnham College, an iris of undoubted character. It forms part of the Newnham Collection of irises (Henry Sidgwick/Catherine Seville/Old Hall/Peile Hall).

Building your Iris Collection

The standards and style arms of the gently ruffled blooms are dark red bordering on brown. The falls have a velvet texture, deep red with a black sheen and a short pencil line white stripe where the dark orange beard ends. This is a really great addition to our ‘Reds’, darker than Red Pike, with Red Kite, a deeper red still.

Great as a stand alone iris in a group or plant in blocks for real impact. Mid- season flowering.

Mixing with other Colours

This iris combines clear clean colours, great branching and perfect flower shape to create a ‘Perfect’ Iris. Understand why these single colour irises known as ‘selfs’ mix so well with other colours groups to give you real scope to design your own distinctive colour palette.

Plant this distinctive Red Bearded Iris with other ‘Hots’, yellows, magentas, oranges and to great effect with ‘Softs’, the pinks and pale yellows to see the sheer vibrancy of these our irises.

Planting with Pinks

Remember how useful  ‘Pinks’ are in this context, spanning the early/mid/ late flowering periods. Because of this they give you so many options to extend the iris season. Eileen Louise flowers early, Catherine Seville in mid-season, and both Sherwood Pinkand Century Pink are late, very late.

Registered by Newnham College from an iris bred by Barry Emmerson.
