Wharfedale

Wharfedale is a Blue Bearded Iris from Our Award Winning Collection of Exclusive British Irises.

Building your Iris Collection

This is the perfect plant to start building your collection of ‘Cool’ irises to include different shades of blue (lighter and darker) and the whites.

Wharfedale is a new introduction and extends significantly our range of ‘blues’. This stunning iris is different from the other ‘blues’;  less ruffled, deeper colour and more intense than our other paler ‘blues’, ‘Bryan’s Best Blue’ and ‘Skye Blue’.

It has perfect form with classic flower shape and characteristic ‘Dodsworth’ branching. This makes Wharfedale a really special iris; it is hardy, with good bud count and as we will see below, it is a great foil for Hot colours. This iris has everything and should be one of your irises of choice. I have no hesitation in recommending this iris.

Named after one of the famous Yorkshire Dales, and the wonderful river Wharfe which flows through it – a favourite destination for Yorkshire fly fishermen.

Plant this Blue Bearded Iris on its own, or in groups, blocks or drifts

Mixing with other Colours

These ‘Dodsworth’ irises combine clear clean colours, great branching and perfect flower shape to create a ‘Perfect’ Iris. Understand why these single colour irises known as ‘selfs’ mix so well with other colours groups to give you real scope to design your own distinctive colour palette.

Mix with all colour groups ‘Cools’, ‘Softs’ and ‘Hots’, thus making it a most versatile plant.

Wharfedale is unusual amongst the Cool Colours in that the intense deep blue is a great foil for some of the Hots (oranges, yellows and reds); try it with William of Orange, Charnwood Delight (Yellow) and Red Pike. These colour combinations are surprising, but sensational…and well worth the experiment. The contrast between deep blue and orange is spectacular!

Planting with Pinks

Remember how useful  ‘Pinks’ are in this context, spanning the early/mid/ late flowering periods. Because of this they give you so many options to extend the iris season. Eileen Louise flowers early, Catherine Seville in mid-season, and both Sherwood Pink and Century Pink are late, very late

Registered by Bryan Dodsworth in 1989. British Dykes Medal 1991.

Height 42” (107cm). Ruffled mid-blue. White beard.
