Bryan’s Best Blue

Discover Bryan’s Best Blue, our iconic Classic Blue Bearded Iris from our Award Winning Collection of British Irises.

Building your Iris Collection

This is the perfect plant to start building your collection of ‘Cool’ irises which include different shades of blue (lighter and darker) and the whites.

There are many blue irises available, but, without doubt this is one of the very best you will find anywhere. This is a  sumptuous azure blue, of great subtlety and intensity, yet robust with exquisite flowers. You can see that this is a truly exceptional and captivating iris, a ‘must’ for the connoisseur and amateur alike.

My father who won twelve individual Dykes Medals for iris hybridising, said this was the best blue iris he had ever produced. And, after his death we thought it only fitting to name it in his memory.

Bryan’s Best Blue is great as a stand alone iris in a group, or plant in blocks for real impact. Mid-season.

Mixing with other Colours

These ‘Dodsworth’ irises combine clear clean colours, great branching and perfect flower shape to create a ‘Perfect’ Iris. Understand why these single colour irises known as ‘selfs’ mix so well with other colours groups to give you real scope to design your own distinctive colour palette.

Bryan’s Best Blue has the quality and intensity to be used to great effect with both the ‘Cools’, ‘Softs’ and ‘Hots’ making it one of the most versatile plants in the Collection. If blue is your colour, this is the plant for you, and if you are new to irises, it’s a great place to start.

Plant this distinctive Classic Blue Bearded Iris with other  ‘Cools’, blues and whites , with ‘Hots’, yellows, magentas, oranges and to great effect with ‘Softs’, the pinks and pale yellows to see the sheer vibrancy of these ‘Dodsworth’ irises.

Planting with Pinks

Remember how useful  ‘Pinks’ are in this context, spanning the early/mid/ late flowering periods. Because of this they give you so many options to extend the iris season. Eileen Louise flowers early, Catherine Seville in mid-season, and both Sherwood Pink and Century Pink are late, very late.

Registered. Bred by Bryan Dodsworth. Height 42″(107cm). Ruffled Pale Blue Self with veining on falls, yellow beard, with white tip. Scented with subtle aromatic fragrance.
